Underestimating the Power of Personality Tests
TRANSCRIPT OF VIDEO:
Often times, I have people come to me with curiosities about personality assessments. They may remember a time when a manager or leader asked them to take this assessment and they read the results and kind of decided “Yeah, I agree with it“ or not, but then nothing was done with it. It’s either sitting in a pile of papers, or in a drawer, or in a closet somewhere. And they didn’t really do anything with it. Whether it was the individual or the organization, they didn’t incorporate it as part of the culture. And I would say that was a HUGE disservice.
So if you have a personality test sitting around somewhere and you are curious about it – if it wasn’t too long ago, go ahead and find those results. Maybe you can look online or contact somebody who can give you more insight into what you can do to further explore some of those results with yourself. Or, if it’s been a while, maybe one of the things that you can do is re-take that assessment (if it’s something you’re curious about), and kind of see how much you’ve changed, how much you’ve shifted – and kind of look at your life... What are some of the events that may have happened that may have shifted your perspective or some of your results?
There’s a lot of power in assessments. I just think there’s a huge disconnect between the research that was done to design the assessments and the algorithms that were done to get the results, and the message out to individuals to understand the power that’s within these assessments and what they can do to use it to impact their own lives. Not only their lives, their decisions, their activities, the events, how they react to things, their relationships. There’s a lot of power in assessments.
My name is Elvira Marie Chang, and I’m a Trainer and a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach. The tool that I primarily focus on is Gallup’s CliftonStrengths assessment. If you have any questions regarding the assessment, your innate talents, what you can do with the information that you have about yourself, how do you explore that in your life, feel free to connect with me or send me a message. I’d love to talk to you about it.
